New to site 9/30/95 -- First of all, if possible, can a floor plan of the apartment be provided? Secondly, a few questions/thougts... why does a actress have such a wide variety of computer equipment, and what is her computer background? Also, a bit fuzzy on the importance of the erased hard drive -- is this in keeping with a crime of passion? or a psychopath? This seems to be a key point to the investigation.

Response:
1-Floor plan is coming right up!
2-Valerie Vilson's computer needs were related to her thesis. She was a novice.

Fri Sep 29 11:51:59 1995

Lisa Wood can't remember "that month let alone that night" yet she can remember some guy slowly nibbling on a toothpick in a sexy manner? Sounds like someone has her running scared. Did she in fact move and were you able to keep up with her whereabouts?

Response: Ms Wood is still at her address in New Orleans. Her location is monitored weekly.

It is common for witnesses to be reluctant and even evasive. The more interesting item in her interview is mention of the toothpick. This detail gives us a new edge.

Fri Sep 29 11:07:38 1995

Lisa Woods' "Unsolved Mysteries" interview looked like an attempt to steer attention towards someone SHE wants suspected. Also, her comments about only seeing silhouettes and then saying that he was good looking don't make sense. How does she know who she was seeing from across the street if all she saw were silhouettes, and how does she know if he was good looking or not? ALSO, why is she so hot for the police to tell her information on a murder case???? Is she wondering if the trail is leading to herself yet?

Response: The discrepancies in her comments have puzzled our staff. This alone was the motivation for the follow-up. The Lisa Wood connection is under investigation. Expect more information soon.

Fri Sep 29 11:00:50 1995

Lisa Wood did not just amend her original story; it seems that she changed it. First, she said that she just saw their silhouettes as they were leaving the bar. Now she claims that she was watching him at the bar chewing a toothpick (giving him a lot more attention). Something has obviously been going on in her life to make her change her story this many months later. As you know, a person's mememory gets less accurate as time passes. Perhaps Lisa has been in contact with Greg Giblini in some manner in the last several months. Have you all considered monitoring her activities and communication in some manner?

Response: She is being monitored. However, there is little chance that her phone conversations will be monitored. Only a few thousand legal phone taps occur each year. The evidence here does not permit such an intrusion into personal privacy.

If Giblini makes contact with Ms. Wood, we'll know about it.

Fri Sep 29 11:00:12 1995

Why is the subject in the photo on the refrigerator considered a male? The resolution isn't all that great over a computer, but subject looks like a female with a shaved head. Do the facial features resemble any female acquaintances?

Response: It is definitely a male. It is William Giblini, victim #2. He is pictured in make-up for a production of "Wait Until Dark."

According to sources at the Main Street Theatre, where he performed, William Giblini was a masterful amatuer make-up artist.

Fri Sep 29 10:35:52 1995

It seems strange to me that Valerie would have a picture of william on her fridge when you say that they didn't know each other, are you sure? Did Greg live with Valerie, if not did ya'll find anything of importance at his place. Don't you think its strange that Lisa Wood is moving soon and that she thought Greg was cute when she could barely see him in the dark and across the parking lot. what if she is leaving to meet up with Greg. I think that ya'll should keep a watch on her. Valerie could have had entries in her diary linking Greg with a drug ring and when she found out he was cheating on her she might have threatened him. Greg might have found out that Valerie and William were conversating throught the computer that would give reason to kill both of them. Just some ideas.

Response: Thank you. Yes, I find these connections strange and puzzling. We are currently researching motive. Any ideas here giving Ms. Wood a motive, would be appreciated.

Fri Sep 29 02:43:19 1995

Spotted an error in your "Press Coverage" section about William Giblini. It says, "the victim was Giblini's younger brother". Isn't he a lot older?

Response: Thanks. He is a lot older. It was a typo.

Thu Sep 28 23:50:29 1995

I know nothing of the area around Oxford, but I am guessing that dead bodies don't turn up every day. The newspaper page contained an article about a "repairman" who was found dead and was last seen the evening before the murder. What kind of repairman was he? Might there be a connection? He might be the third person and a DNA sample must be possible to obtain. Any possibilities here?

Response: Perhaps. There is no connection other than the article. That article appeared some time after the murders.

We have our share of murder here. Probably why local writer John Grisham does so well here. Incidently, Grisham also appears on that page. The full view is at TIF file. 92K

Attn- Det. Armstrong: re: Greg Giblini's mental processes under stress as per Joanne Graham's e-mail message quoted in the response to the Fri SEPT 1 01:35:11 1995 post (first post during Sept.) Suggest you refer to STANTON E. SAMENOW/ INSIDE THE CRIMINAL MIND. I've recently found it useful in dealing with a multiple homicide involving between 130 to 150 deaths. There's another case out this way that may also be of interest to you, will advise as soon as I clear it with out- of-state detectives who have jurisdiction on their side of the river *A1633

Response: Excellent. "Inside the Criminal Mind" has been mentioned by several officers familiar with the case. As usual, I will heed your advice and seek out the book. I've been examining another case where the bodies were posed and mutilated. No sexual attack. The killings occurred in the Northwest. Let me know if there is a connection.
Thank you. Keep me posted on your work.

My background is law enforcement. I was also married to a cop (crime scene investigator/latent print expert/ currently a DA investigator). I also have a family member employed at SDSO Homicide... I've just stumbled onto this link. I want to speculate as to the authenticity, but - fact or fiction - whodunits are fun! I've yet to look at everything, but my gut says a woman killed Victim 1. Who cleans up?? Also, in my experience, women who act out irrationally begin dissecting what they did and look for validation for what they've done. During that period, their thoughts are "let's be nice now", but the more they look at their destruction, the more manic they become. The level of rage which pushed them towards the irrational act sometimes returns at a ruthless level - hence, the disfiguration. "See what you made me do??" is the interpretation of the second rage. I am reminded of women who kill their small children in a fit of rage, only to lapse into a euphoria during which they chastise their child for being naughty while cleaning them up and dressing them in clean clothes. These dead kids are drug around and "posed". Many times when reality returns, the experience drives the women to mutilation of the victim, abandonment of the corpse, suicide...basically, the mania returns to another uncontrolled level. I have been unable to look at V2's evidence - I get a message which says something about the server is prohited to view the URL... Like I said - fact or fiction - they're fun, and this is superbly coordinated.

Response: Thank you for your observations and your gracious compliments. The Crime Scene has a single purpose; to collect and share information.

I checked the photo links, we've had trouble in the past. Thanks for the notification.

Thu Sep 28 07:11:44 1995

Is it possible that the missing condom was used to store her blood to throw at the fridge. Also, what was on the videos found on top of her t.v.

Response: A possible and a compelling observation. Any ideas regarding motive for using a condom in this manner?

As for the videos, they are short and violent films. They have names like, "Rice Eaters" and "Butt Cheeks." The videos will not be sampled here. We are presently banned by SurfWatch. These videos might get us kicked off our server. Later, I may make them available via disk.

Thu Sep 28 00:53:11 1995

I DO NOT THINK GREG GIBLIN KILLED HER. JUST BECAUSE HE WAS PHOTOGRAPHED PURCHASING CONDOMS THE SAME DAY DOES NOT MEAN HIS INTENTIONS WERE TO USE THEM WITH HIS GIRLFRIEND.
I THINK HE WAS AT THE SCENE AND WALKED IN ON LISA WOOD AND HER ENGAGED IN EITHER A SEXUAL ACT OR A DISAGREEMENT. FOR HER TO HAVE BEEN KILLED IT WAS BECAUSE OF LISA'S JEALOUSY OF HER AND GREG'S RELATIONSHIP. LISA WANTED HER AND COULD NOT HAVE HER OR SOMETHING WENT SOUR BETWEEN THE TWO AND GREG HAPPENED TO HAVE WALKED IN.
HE'S IN HIDING BECAUSE HE'S AFRAID THAT HE WOULD AUTOMATICALLY BECOME A SUSPECT. HE'S INNOCENT. I THINK SO FAR.

Response: You may be right. While there is evidence linking Greg Giblini to the scene, there are several unanswered questions. How does William Giblini's body fit into your theory?

Wed Sep 27 15:29:53 1995

You never answer the question yes or no: Is this a real crime case? (I for one believe that it is.)

Response: Anyone interested, send me e-mail with the subject heading FAULKNER. ([email protected])

Wed Sep 27 15:07:43 1995

Since she was a student, did you check her notebooks and books for any clues she may have scribbled and doodled in the margins?

Response: Yes. The were useless. Perhaps we should share the doodles here when time permits.

Wed Sep 27 15:05:06 1995

Just a thought: maybe the fact that the people involved had drama backgrounds influenced the way the murder and the subsequent staged scene was played out. Was there a play that either of them had been working on or had been particularly fond of that had a similar scene?

Response: William Giblini was in "Wait Until Dark" shortly before Valerie Vilson's Murder. Vilson was also in a play shortly before her death. There seems to be no other correlation.

Wed Sep 27 15:03:25 1995

The condoms were lubricated. It seems to me that you wouldn't store drugs in a lubricated condom. Perhaps they went out that evening, returned to her apartment, smoked pot and drank and had sex. He left (taking the used condom with him) and she proceeded to go to bed. After she was asleep, he returned with a friend, using a key he had (is it possible he had a key?) and shot her while she slept. The friend, who was computer-literate, destroyed the hard drive while Greg moved the body and staged the kitchen scene. Since she died at 6:00am and her body was not found until 10:00am, this would give them plenty of time. Obviously this was not done in a hasty manner.

Response: Possible, but why?

Wed Sep 27 14:07:43 1995

Another thought: if the victim and the suspect were planning an extended vacation together following her graduation in May, perhaps evidence of the itinerary they were planning could be found that might suggest the suspect's whereabouts.

Response: That would be useful. The itinerary has not been found. Vilson's parents told investigators that Vilson and Giblini planned to go to the Grand Canyon, Oklahoma City, Crater Lake and all the big holes in the ground they could find.

Wed Sep 27 14:01:52 1995

If the blood on the refrigerator was splattered there while the abdominal wounds were being inflicted, why are there not similar blood splatters on the stove, which the body is closer to? It seems to me that the blood may have been in- tentionally splattered on the refrigerator to draw attention to the photograph of the unidentified caucasian male. Perhaps this person was the source of the unidentified blood sample on the cat hair.

Response: The blood was intentionally spattered. We don't know the reason. The photo has been identified as William Giblini, in a costume from "Wait Until Dark."

Tue Sep 26 22:22:54 1995

Just a thought, but did anyone check the drain trap for hair or fibers? This is a horrible crime-- I hope you get him!

Response: Yes. Investigators found blood, tissue and hair from the victim. Greg Giblini's hair was also found.

Tue Sep 26 12:27:15 1995

If there was no used condom found and due to the blood splatter on the fridge is it possible the condom was used to store the blood to splash it on the fidge?

Response: What an original idea. Clever. Yet, the motive is missing. Any ideas?

Tue Sep 26 10:46:55 1995

What nationalalities? Describe the wounds. Detail information how the blood, got on the refrigerator. Who's finger prints was on the door knobs? Was the weapon present? Who was their best friends? Was any was any secrets ever told to them? What type of people did she associate with? Did she ever have any parties? Have any Law enforcer ever talked her? Have she ever sent money to anyone, any reciepts? Was she a loner. Have any fancy car or cab ever been in the area? if so when who was in the cab. what did they look like. every one who new her should be a susspect, and especially... Oh well I'm tired have a nice day. Oh! Did it appear she was being tortured for information? Bye!

Response: Far too many questions. However, some good ideas.

Comments between Sept 11 and Sept 25 were lost due to a system failure.

Mon Sep ?? 12:06:54 1995

The Macintosh Qudra line has SSCI drives. The drive in the apartment was an IDE. Could someone have switched them?

Response: The Quadra 630 has an IDE drive.

Mon Sep 11 12:06:54 1995

My first assumption would be that she kept a journal/diary on her computer. I'd also like to know about the Prozac. Did she go to a psychiatrist or get it from her MD? Why was she taking it? Did she attend a support group or something like that? Why was the phone message from the day before the murder? Does that imply that she didn't feel "comfortable" enough to listen to her messages with whover she was with to listen to her messages? You're doing a great job.

Response: 1-There was a journal on the computer. Several print-outs from it were identified in her room at her parent's house.
2-The prescription was from a MD working in the campus infirmary. It was for stress-related symptoms. The victim complained of an inability to sleep and anxiousness. She had little follow-up support for the prescription.
3-Interesting interpretation of events. Thanks.

Mon Sep 11 01:51:35 1995

Has there been a RFLP analysis done from William Giblini's crime scene blood samples to compare with the unidentified person's samples from the wilson crime scene? Was the blood that was found on the cat's fur found else- where in the apartment?Where? /P.D.in georgia/

Response: A DNA analysis is underway to compare William Giblini's DNA with the samples found at the original crime scene. The test, while highly accurate, takes nearly two months to register and interpret results.

Mon Sep 11 01:00:09 1995

>From the pictures given that could not be all that was found in her purse. Were are her cosmics? Most girls I know carry at least two shades of lipsticks and at least one compact, if not more than one, in their purse. Unless of course that's not really her purse at all or just as likely she had more than one purse and that one was taken upon her death. Were are her crdit cards, etc, and driver's liscene that most women carry in a sort of bill fold in their purses.

Response: There were numerous items of cosmetic and hygene supplies. Their inclusion seemed extraneous. The victim had a planner which held credit cards and cash. The planner was undisturbed.

Sat Sep 9 15:35:10 1995

This guy is obviously a psycho. I hope you catch him. Since he washed his victim, he seems somewhat intelligent and has obviously thought this out. Since he had protected sex with victim, I wonder why he would bother washing the body. Also, I don't know what would make him so angry a as to disfigure the face of the victim. That seems very personal, disfiguring a face. I'm wondering why the subject is heading south down through Georgia unless it's to get a job that pays out cash and he can use an alias.

Response: 1-There is nothing to indicate the victim had sex that evening. A used condom was not found, only a wrapper. 2-No comment regarding the victim's face. This detail will help positively identify the killer. 3-It seems likely Greg Giblini worked for cash while in the south. He has limited funds.

Fri Sep 8 17:04:03 1995

As for Mr.William Giblini having black hair and a red beard: No way. Has the lab run tests to see if his head hair has evidence of dye? Perhaps he tried to disguise his appearance and was now growing a beard while waiting for the dye to grow out. Also, have you checked on the doctor that perscribed the Prozac? If it was a Psychologist, perhaps Valerie discussed her concerns about these "threats" with the doctor. Were all pages intact in her address book? Has anyone checked into John Grisham (who donated $50,000) he seems awfully generous for man who's just a babysitter's employer.

Response: 1-It's true. The red beard is not a bright hue. While there is no evidence of dye. William Giblini did have theatre make-up in his luggage. This is not entirely unusual because he was an amatuer actor. 2-There is little on record regarding specific concerns leading to the prescription. Anxiety and Sleeplessness are listed. 3-John Grisham is a generous man.

Fri Sep 8 14:27:59 1995

Suggest you modify the "view" link to be by month or some other arbitrary separation to speed the download for those of us following this case. eg.: view_JUL, view_AUG, etc. Thanks. GFH

Response: Excellent idea. We are working on a new interface.
For now, the best way to keep up with changes is to check the index for new entries.
We've also broken up the comments by month. When time permits, comments will be indexed by subject.

Fri Sep 8 07:48:12 1995

What is the relationship between the two victims, other than the suspect.

Response: None known.

Fri Sep 1 09:44:57 1995

This is so interesting. I think the reason why Valerie wanted the gun so bad should be further investigated. As well as who eles's blood was at the sceen of the crime. It is strange that they would seem happy together and then he would just flip out. Maybe the drugs made him flip? Why was Valerie taking Prozac? Who else could have been there that night? This guy has real problems, I hope you catch him soon.

Response: The victim's request for a gun is a tremendous indication that something was amiss in her life. When the h
