The interview was conducted at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff’s office by Detective Armstrong and Murphy. The interview was recorded on a portable tape recorder with the witness consent.
Detective Ted Armstrong
Detective Samantha Murphy
Julie Ann Moore
Det. Murphy: Julie, take a seat and for the record please state your name and address.
Julie Moore: My name is Julie Ann Moore and I live at 722 Shady Oaks Circle in Oxford.
Det. Murphy: Thank you Julie, you seem calmer than the last time we interviewed you.
Julie Moore: Thanks to you Detective Murphy I’ve been able to sleep at night without having nightmares. I appreciate the help you gave me in finding a doctor to talk to.
Det Murphy: You're welcome. I’m glad he’s helping you through this.
Det: Armstrong: Julie, tell us again why you were at the service station. Are you sure you had to use the bathroom or did you know the girl, and were you involved in her murder.
Julie Moore: My god! How could you think such a thing? Of course I had to use the bathroom. After we called the police I used the men’s room that’s how desperate I was. The place was nasty.
I can’t fathom any possible reason I would want to kill that girl. I could never be that cruel to anyone. Of course I didn’t know her. But in one of my therapy sessions I remembered that I saw her once a few weeks ago at the station. I stopped and pumped my own gas and I remember seeing her and another girl but they didn’t pay any attention to me. She was too busy flirting with Johnny the attendant. I noticed because her friend seemed agitated at her and wanted to leave. I think she was teasing him and the friend didn’t like it.
Det. Armstrong: Julie did you know Johnny before this murder happened?
Julie Moore: I may have seen him but I really didn’t pay much attention. I don’t stop there too often. I always pump my own gas and use my debit card so I don’t need to go inside.
Det: Armstrong: What was Johnny’s demeanor after you discovered the body and went to call the police?
Julie Moore: Johnny was very shaky while we waited for the police. He couldn’t sit still. He kept saying, " Who could have done such a thing." He said he saw her at the station but never knew her name. She would flirt with him but he didn’t think she really meant it because why would a girl like her want with a farm boy. He said she was just having fun with him. He said he had thought about asking her to go to church with him but he never had the courage. He was afraid she would laugh at him.
Det Murphy: After discovering the body how long were you at the service station? Did you see anything or any suspicious person hanging around?
Julie Moore: I was there for about an hour. The police officers asked me some questions and had me sit down. I was beside myself. They called my mother to come and pick me up. I was in no condition to drive. My mom and a friend came and picked up my car and myself. I don’t remember seeing anyone that looked out of the ordinary. There were a lot of police officers and I wasn’t thinking straight. Do you think the killer might have been watching us? Thinking about it sends chills up my spine.
Det Murphy: I’m sorry Julie, that we have to bring all this back up but we need all the information we can get to catch this killer.
Have you thought anymore about the man that you saw in the car that sped past you?
Julie Moore: I wish I could be of more help. I’ve tried to remember things about the car and I’ve tried to envision the man’s face but I can’t. I only remember he had dark hair. (Witness starts to cry.) (Detective Murphy hands her a tissue.) This is so difficult. Detective Murphy I was told that she was your niece’s best friend. How horrible this must be for both of you. I hope you find this monster soon.
Det: Murphy: Thank you Julie, I’m sorry you had to witness such a horrible crime. We will find this person and they will get what they deserve.
Det: Armstrong: Thank you for coming in today. I know it’s difficult but we have to interview anyone that may have information that will help us to apprehend the person that murdered this young woman. Det Murphy will see you out. If you remember anything please feel free to call.
