Press: Hit and Run Collision: One Man Dead, Wife Injured

Oxford Eagle, May 14, 2009

By Kelly Shackleton
Staff Writer

A local morning car accident claimed the life of John Fitzgerald and sent his wife to Baptist Memorial Hospital. Adela Fitzgerald, 49, of Topeka, Kansas, is listed in critical condition and claims she never saw the vehicle that hit them. "It was just a blur. I don't know where it came from." John Fitzgerald, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wreck happened about 9:45 am at the intersection of Molly Barr Road and Lamar Avenue .

According to witness Debbie Mason, a red car ran the red light and crashed head on into the vehicle that John Fitzgerald was driving. She said the sound was deafening. "I grabbed a pen and my checkbook when I saw the red car was going to leave the scene. I tried to remember the license plate numbers but I could only recall the first three."

The Yoknapatawpha Sheriff's Department asks that anyone who might have information related to the accident to call.
