Interview: Alexander Jay Coleman, owner of 1985 Toyota Corolla

Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 9:30 AM

The witness, Alex Coleman, was apprehended at the home of Lacy Borders and taken into custody for questioning. The interview was conducted at the Yoknapatawpha Sheriff's Department and recorded on a portable tape recorder with the witness's knowledge and consent.

Detective Samantha Murphy
Detective Ted Armstrong
Alex Coleman

Detective Armstrong: Here are your choices, you can either sit yourself down in this chair or we can find a nice little cell for you to sit in. What's it going to be?

Alex Coleman: I told you I'd come out, why did you have to barge in and drag me out like that?

Detective Armstrong: You were headed to the rear of the house; we thought you were making a run for it.

Alex Coleman: Nah, I said I'd come out and I would've. I just wanted a cold one first.

Detective Murphy: Please state your name and address for the record.

Alex Coleman: I'm Alexander Jay Coleman and my mailing address is 222 Country Club Road, my parents' house.

Detective Murphy: Mailing address.  Do you live there or not?

Alex Coleman: Well, I do and I don't.

Detective Armstrong: Kid, we do not have time to play stupid little head games with you, answer the question.

Alex Coleman: Ok, ok. Don’t have a heart attack. I guess I do, it's just that I got into an argument with my extremely over-protective mother and left a few weeks ago. She doesn't know that I was staying with Lacy.

Detective Murphy:  What did you argue about?

Alex Coleman: It was always the same thing with her. She treats me like I'm 16 or something. She wants me home at midnight. Can you believe that? I’m 24 years old! I just got sick of it. So I left.

Detective Armstrong: All that aside, where were you on the morning of May thirteenth?

Alex Coleman: I have no idea. I don’t carry a pocket calendar with me and jot down my every move. Where is it you want me to have been?

Detective Murphy: A man was killed that morning Alex. We have reason to believe that you hit him with your car and then left the scene.

Alex Coleman: WHAT? I didn't kill anyone! Don't you people know that I haven't had my car for about a month now?

Detective Murphy: How would we know that Alex? Did you report it as stolen or something?

Alex Coleman: I didn't mean that you knew. I'm sorry. You just got me a little upset there for a minute. My car was stolen but I didn't report it. I just figured it would show up. It's not like it was anything anyone would want to keep. It was a piece of crap when I got it.

Detective Armstrong: Was it missing in January, too, Alex?

Alex Coleman: What…no. I had it in January. Why?

Detective Armstrong: We'll ask the questions Alex. We have discovered that your car was involved in another accident in January, a hit and run against Blake Jenson.

Alex Coleman: I know Blake Jenson. I was never involved in any accident with him.

Detective Murphy: Did you or did you not take your car to Kenny's Body Shop for repairs in January Alex?

Alex Coleman: Oh that. Yes I did. It was a rainy, sleety night and I ran off the road and hit a tree. I have never been in a real accident; I've never even had a ticket.

Detective Armstrong: Do you have anyone who can back that story up?

Alex Coleman: Yes…yes I do. My bud Brent was with me when I ran off the road.

Detective Armstrong: Did you set your car on fire to try and destroy evidence of a crime?

Alex Coleman: You found my car? Someone burned it up? I wonder if my insurance covers that.

Detective Murphy: Do you have coverage for theft?

Alex Coleman: Aren't you the funny one. I didn't report it as stolen I told you.

Detective Armstrong: Why would you? I don't think it was ever stolen to begin with.

Alex Coleman: Well it was.

Detective Armstrong: So you are telling us that you didn't hit Blake Jenson and you didn't hit John Fitzgerald and leave the scene in both accidents?

Alex Coleman: That is exactly what I am telling you! I've had about enough of this crap, either arrest me or let me go. I'm done talking.

Detective Murphy: We aren't going to arrest you Alex, but we are going to see if your story pans out. What is your bud Brent's last name please?

Alex Coleman: Woods.

Detective Murphy: What is his address or telephone number?

Alex Coleman: Find it yourself. This is unbelievable. I'm outta here!

Detective Murphy: Wait Alex, one more question. Did anyone else drive your car besides you?

Alex Coleman: Yeah, sure. My Mom drove it occasionally and I have let friends use it in the past. Do you think maybe one of them hit that man and killed him?

Detective Armstrong: Alex, do NOT leave town. We will be talking with you again, count on it.

Alex Coleman: Yeah, whatever.

Interview ends:10:02 AM
